Once again it was all about the money
On the 2nd of August in 1937 The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 was passed in America. This was a United States Act that placed a tax on the sale of cannabis which would effectively render marijuana and all its by-products illegal. The United States was producing over 500 tons a year at the time and business parties argued that marijuana was a threat to the extensive timber holdings.
Extra Note: Although the spelling “marijuana” is more common, the actual spelling Marihuana used in the Tax Act was most commonly used in Federal Government documents at the time.
