The first woman to swim across the English Channel
Gertrude Caroline Ederle, born October 23, 1905 was the first woman to swim across the English Channel. She began at Cape Gris-Nez in France at 07:08 on the morning of August 6, 1926 and came ashore at Kings down, Kent, 14 hours and 34 minutes later.
Swimming over 36 kilometres through choppy waters and capricious tides, she was sometimes called “Queen of the Waves.
Extra Note: Her record stood until Florence Chadwick swam the Channel in 1950 in 13 hours and 20 minutes.
