The 7th Day of August

Philippe Petit tight rope walk!

Philippe Petit, born 13 August 1949 is a French high wire artist gained fame for his high wire walk between the roofs of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in Manhattan, New York City.

On the morning of 7 August 1974 Petit walked, danced, laid down on the wire, and saluted watchers from a kneeling position 400 metres (1,312 feet) above the ground. He rigged a 200 kilogram cable and used a custom made 8 metre (30-foot) long, 25-kilogram balancing pole. He performed for 45 minutes, making eight passes along the wire.

The towers were still under construction and had not yet been fully occupied. Office workers, construction crews and policemen cheered him on while he performed his unauthorised feat.

Extra Note: Petit referred to the accomplishment as “le coup 2”.
