2003 – Mission: Space opens to the public in Walt Disney World
Mission: Space is a space-themed pavilion and attached centrifugal motion simulator attraction located on the eastern side of Future World at Epcot, a theme park at the Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida.
Celebrating its grand opening on October 9th 2003 with a ceremony attended by Disney CEO Michael Eisner, HP CEO Carly Fiorina and NASA Administrator Sean O’Keefe, as well as several NASA astronauts and two crew members from the International Space Station.
The attraction simulates what an astronaut might experience aboard a spacecraft on a mission to Mars, from the higher g-force of liftoff to the speculative hypersleep.
The pavilion includes a gift shop titled Mission Space: Cargo Bay, an interactive children’s play area called the Advanced Training Lab, and an upcoming restaurant titled Space 220.
Extra Note: Several people have been taken to local hospitals for chest pain and nausea after riding. Most who complained of these symptoms were over 55 years old.
